One more close-up mum photo—a still-opening bloom, but much farther along than the bud of a couple of days ago. Mums seem so ordinary until you get up close. A lesson of nature and of humanity.

5×3.5″ acrylic, collage
I have a lot of collage material from magazines: words, images, colors, patterns. I have a lot of collage material period! I picked out two words that appealed to me today. First came “beautiful.” It almost turned out to be “beautiful [some-other-thing],” but then I happened upon “world.”
I sketched out broadly what I thought I was going to paint, then I just started playing with the brush and paint. No masterpiece, just simple depictions of some of the images I am constantly thinking about after our mountain trip out west. I am ready for more mountains!

We saw these flowers in Glacier, Yellowstone, and Grand Teton (where I took this photo). They look like huge dandelion seedheads, but I couldn’t find out what they really are. It may be difficult to tell in this close-up, but if any of you know what this is, comment below or email me!

Yellowstone National Park is a strange place—or rather, it’s a place with many strange features—or, maybe both! This is a bubbling mudpot that sometimes shot mud several feet into the air (be careful out there!). It’s so mono-colored neutral, but makes up for it in activity.
