12-18-15 “hot off the wire”
4×4″ acrylic blockprint, collage on paper
I collaged some strips of a magazine image along with two paint chip papers, then went over that with a blockprint (using acrylic). I added the background color using brushed-on transparent acrylic (and enhanced some of the non-printing areas of the blockprint next to the collaged materials).
12-17-15 “wrinkled”
11×11″ (approx.) acrylic on silk
I kind of love this one. In looking for fabric for a Christmas project, I discovered a large piece of white silk I had bought years ago for an art project, didn’t end up using it, and stuffed it away in a zipped plastic bag. I cut out a couple of square pieces of the silk to do a couple of scrape paintings using it as the “paper.” I love the results on this one, so I may do more in the waning days of 2015.
I’m not really sure what caused the “wrinkles” in the painting—was it the scraping tool? the parchment paper underneath? something about the paint itself? I don’t know. But it’s a cool effect, however it happened!
Scraped several layers of paint on this one. Not sure yet. I was going to call it Diana Ross or Cher because I could see a lead singer in a gown or a mod pantsuit. But it’s pretty subtle. Anyway, interesting colors and textures, but probably needs some lettering or blockprinting for me. Short time and hesitation stopped me.
I was looking through some scraps of silk I used to make a pastoral stole a few years ago, and found silk in a lot of these colors. So I tried a scrape using the colors as inspiration. I filled in along the sides with brushed-on paint. I’m not enamored with the watercolor paper texture here, but it will have to do.
12-13-15 “hopeful horse”
7×5.5″ acrylic, collage on matboard
I took a small paper prayer flag from a string of them I received in the mail and collaged it on this scraped painting that went a little awry. Better now.
12-11-15 “spiral express”
8×5″ acrylic, collage on matboard
In this one, I started with an existing scraped painting and added a little bit of new paint. Then I further cut up strips of postcards/bookmarks to use as collage pieces. The gluing of collage items was a little tedious, but I kind of like the effect.
The idea of doing this came to me in the middle of the night when I wasn’t sleeping and I wrote it down so I wouldn’t forget (and so I would go back to sleep, hopefully).
12-10-15 “behind the curtain”
8×6″ acrylic on matboard
I revitalized a years-old scraped painting (in the reject bin) by adding the always popular transparent magenta. I like how the original colors retain some of their power underneath.
12-09-15 “beyond the fence” —SOLD—
4×4″ acrylic on paper
I got these little 4×4″ watercolor papers at the art store recently. I like the size—bigger than an Artist Trading Card, but very doable as a daily practice.
This piece began with some knifed lines, some of which became the “fence” in the foreground. I brushed on the greens and blue after, as well as the brown at the bottom. Somewhere in the middle of the process I could see more clearly what this was becoming, so I followed the cues.
