9×7″ acrylic on silk

One of a series of scraped paintings on silk. The dark blue makes me think of the early, early mornings in winter. And with the shortest day soon behind us, light will begin to return.

12-20-15 "sledding"
12-20-15 “sledding” —SOLD—

4×4″ acrylic on paper

This one just cracks me up. Initially, I began arranging dried blobs of acrylic (from the palette paper) to collage on the paper in a non-objective way—just arranging forms and colors randomly. But then, in the middle of that, appeared unmistakably a red alien/grinch sort of character on a blue saucer sledding downhill (on purple snow, of course). So, why not go with that, right? I added some thick white “snow” on top of the purple/blue blobs, then painted the lighter blue color in the background. Just another example of the weird things that happen in the creative process.

8.5×5.5″ acrylic, silk on paper

This began with a scrape of acrylic (left over on the scraping tool from another painting). I added some strands of silk from a scrap of fabric, although you may have to look closely at the full image view to see them (there are five green strands coming up from the bottom, and one orange one farther up in a spiral shape). I have a feeling I could do more with this and like it more…but it’s a daily jane for now.

4×4″ acrylic blockprint, collage on paper

I collaged some strips of a magazine image along with two paint chip papers, then went over that with a blockprint (using acrylic). I added the background color using brushed-on transparent acrylic (and enhanced some of the non-printing areas of the blockprint next to the collaged materials).

12-17-15 “wrinkled”

11×11″ (approx.) acrylic on silk

I kind of love this one. In looking for fabric for a Christmas project, I discovered a large piece of white silk I had bought years ago for an art project, didn’t end up using it, and stuffed it away in a zipped plastic bag. I cut out a couple of square pieces of the silk to do a couple of scrape paintings using it as the “paper.” I love the results on this one, so I may do more in the waning days of 2015.

I’m not really sure what caused the “wrinkles” in the painting—was it the scraping tool? the parchment paper underneath? something about the paint itself? I don’t know. But it’s a cool effect, however it happened!

12-16-15 “mod”

9×7″ acrylic on matboard

Scraped several layers of paint on this one. Not sure yet. I was going to call it Diana Ross or Cher because I could see a lead singer in a gown or a mod pantsuit. But it’s pretty subtle. Anyway, interesting colors and textures, but probably needs some lettering or blockprinting for me. Short time and hesitation stopped me.

12-14-15 “separations”

8.5×5.5″ acrylic on paper

I was looking through some scraps of silk I used to make a pastoral stole a few years ago, and found silk in a lot of these colors. So I tried a scrape using the colors as inspiration. I filled in along the sides with brushed-on paint. I’m not enamored with the watercolor paper texture here, but it will have to do.

12-13-15 “hopeful horse”

7×5.5″ acrylic, collage on matboard

I took a small paper prayer flag from a string of them I received in the mail and collaged it on this scraped painting that went a little awry. Better now.
