2.5×3.5″ marker on cardstock

When I was a resident artist at a cancer infusion center (offering art activities to patients while they were getting chemo), one of the things I would do is invite patients to make “survivor power cards”—one for themselves and one to leave for another (unknown) patient. That’s what this card hearkens back to for me, in its process, inspiration, and intention. It is a plea, a direction, a hope, an energy, a deep desire.

3.5×2.5″ marker on cardstock

Another hospital doodle. I was going to leave it sort of mandala-like, but it needed something more, so I continued to doodle the lines around the mandala. Cosmos in a cup is the title that just popped into my head just now.

A little doodle for a day of sitting and waiting and listening to the rhythmic breathing of an exhausted sleeper—looking out the window to a beautiful sun-filled grassy space between buildings.

This is a little sketch of an empty IV stand (and part of the bed surround wall) in a hospital room.  I spent a lot of time recently in a variety of such rooms with an ailing family member.  It’s a kind of spare, shaky piece, but perhaps fits the subject matter.

09-16-16 “upheaval”

4×4″ acrylic on paper

Whew! Finally back to a little art-making after moving! Moving creates a lot of discombobulation—both physical and mental (and emotional and spiritual, now that I think about it). Upheaval. So, I painted this. I don’t love it; you may not love it, either. But after several weeks of packing, moving, unpacking, settling, shifting, stacking, opening, closing, etc. etc. etc., at least I’m moving a brush with paint for a creative purpose again! I hope to do more and more.

6×6″ marker on paper

Well, this is as good as it gets this week. An unfinished work. I will be taking off a few weeks from even the lighter random, not-quite-daily jane grind, as we move to a new (to us) house in town. We are in the midst of packing chaos, and in order to make progress in the rest of my studio, I need to pack things up. So…stay tuned, and I’ll get back to sharing artwork on my blog as soon as I can. I hope to finish this unfinished by then! Be well!

digital photo

I was happy to see a neighbor along my neighborhood walking path growing a few milkweed plants for the monarchs, but sad to see this pod that had fallen (or been chewed) off onto the sidewalk. I walked past at first, but then decided to pick it up and take a photo of it once back home. So here’s a daily jane for a busy week. I’m going to try to eke out one more next week, then take August off (at least officially–I hope to still do some creating!).

07-12-16 “get it together”

6×6″ acrylic, ink on paper

I used a couple of different print blocks to start this out. Then I used a palette knife to create various lines with acrylic, a gel pen to embellish the printed circles a bit, and a sponge to apply the transparent paint in the middle. I am stopping here because I don’t want to go too far…but I’m not sure it’s done done.

07-05-16 “sunburst butter lemon meringue”

6×6″ acrylic, marker on paper

This began with some paint scrapes. I was looking in my collage materials for some ideas for accessorizing, and I saw a series of wall paint sample strips. I liked these three words/phrases together so I cut them out and adhered them onto the paint. I decided to doodle with the marker and got a little carried away with that. And here it is. Sunburst Butter Lemon Meringue.

06-30-16 “in the depths”

6×6″ acrylic on paper

The end of June. The end of half a year. I’ve been decidedly less than daily this year, and although that was my intention, I thought I might do a little more than I’ve been able to do these first six months. So be it.

This painting consists of layers of brushwork. What does it all mean? I have no idea. This is playing with paint.

I make no promises about the level of output for the rest of 2016. But I do have some ideas rumbling around that will require more days than one to reveal. I hope to keep playing with paint and other media and posting the results/process right here, though.

Carry on!
